Our Vision
150 years after the guns fell silent, our quest begins. We're driven by a vision - a memorial honoring Minnesota's Civil War veterans.
The memorial will be located at one of two venues.
Historic Fort Snelling:
Where most Minnesotans mustered into service and left for battlefields to the east, south, and some here in Minnesota. Many units returned to Fort Snelling at the end of their service and were also mustered out there.
For Snelling National Cemetery:
Where 26 Union Soldiers rest. Many were from Minnesota where they were reinterred from the old cemetery at Historic Fort Snelling.
In 1861, Governor Alexander Ramsey answered President Lincoln’s call to defend the Union, making Minnesota the first state to commit troops. Over the course of the Civil War, more than 24,000 Minnesotans served.
It is time for Minnesotans to have their own Civil War Memorial to reflect on each regiment, battery, and battalion that many of our ancestors served in, to remember the victories, the sacrifices, and the service willingly given by them to our great state.
Today, our dream is a memorial designed to pay tribute to these Citizen Soldiers.
